Challenges

The Caribbean agrifood sector faces growing pressures from climate change, food import dependence, and declining soil health. Small island economies are highly vulnerable to extreme weather, supply chain disruptions, and rising food costs, which weaken farmer livelihoods and national food security.

At the same time, increased reliance on imported and highly processed foods has contributed to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and other diet-related diseases across the region. Limited access to technology, training, and organized support further constrains farmers’ ability to produce affordable, nutritious food sustainably.
